Bone building balls

Working with clients with digestive complaints and food intolerances, often results in dairy products being removed from their diet, whether it be temporarily or for the longer-term. As a result, I’m often asked about how to obtain sufficient calcium to support bone health.

First things first, whilst dairy is one source of calcium, it’s certainly not the only one. Secondly, whilst calcium plays an important role in supporting bone health, it’s only part of the puzzle.

Now whilst calcium is not the only factor in supporting bone health, it is an essential nutrient that’s role extends far beyond skeletal integrity. So, if you’re not sourcing it from dairy products, where else might you find calcium? Thankfully, calcium is found in several other foods many of which are included in this recipe!

So, get rolling and enjoy these deliciously moreish bliss balls while also supporting your bone health.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of dried figs

  • 1/4 cup of hulled tahini

  • 1/3 cup of unflavoured collagen

  • 2 tbsp of sesame seeds (optional)

  • 1 cup of just boiled water

Method

  1. Remove the stems from the dried figs, add to a bowl and cover with hot water for 5-10 minutes.

  2. Once softened add the figs to a food processor and blitz until well combined (you may need to add in some of the left-over soaking liquid to moisten the mixture).

  3. Add in tahini and blend together.

  4. Add the mixture to a large bowl and gradually stir in the collagen powder.

  5. Roll into balls and coat with sesame seeds if desired.

  6. Place in the refrigerator to firm, then enjoy!

notes

  • You may need to add more liquid or collagen depending on the moistness of the figs.

  • Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
