Whether it’s Paleo, 80/20, vegetarian, low carb, vegan or macrobiotic (I could go on), there seems to be more trends in the nutritional world than there is in the fashion industry! One minute fat is bad for you, the next – fats are in and sugars out. Then it’s “meat causes cancer” oh wait, hold that thought – “we should all be eating like cavemen!” Ugh, it’s exhausting just thinking about it. How on earth did it become so darn complicated to figure out what the heck we should or shouldn’t be eating?
Society and predominately the media often leads us to be believe that there is a right and a wrong way to eat, furthermore, it generates a one size fits all approach to health, particularly nutrition. What seems to go unnoticed, is that just like we’re all so unique when it comes to the type of music we listen to, the clothes we wear, how we style our hair, we are all so unique. Our bodies are made up of trillions, yes trillions of different cells, all of which make us physiologically different to those around us. To think that what makes one person thrive will be the same for the next, well it just doesn’t make sense! Of course, eating your veggies, drinking water, getting quality sleep are going to beneficial to most of humanity but the rest comes down to the individual.
As a health coach I have seen time and time again how one person can thrive on a plant based diet, while another is lethargic, bloated and unwell. I’ve also known many that have followed the same diet for years but for some reason, all of a sudden, it no longer serves them. I believe the human body is an incredibly complex system, one which we may never completely understand and one that may not logically make sense. Therefore I believe we need to tune in to ourselves, and really listen to what our bodies are telling us. No doctor no matter how qualified can know how you’re feeling, that parts all you.
It’s time for you to become your own expert. Experiment. You might want to cut back on dairy – see how you feel, do you have more energy? Is your skin noticeably clearer? Or gluten, do you often feel bloated or heavy after certain meals? What’s the common denominator?
Take notes on what works and what doesn’t, you’ll start to notice patterns. “Whenever I eat such and such it makes me feel….?
Learning what makes you thrive is exciting! It’s like someone has given you the key to unlock your dreams of optimal health, only now you know, you had it all along!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m the first person to shout my latest ‘discovery’ from the roof tops – just ask my friends how “ahhhmazing banana nice cream is!” and “omg dates stuffed with almond butter is better than any chocolate bar!” But you’ll start to see that what excites me, might be different to you and it’s not all about the hype in the media or the latest fad. Nutrition really shouldn’t be that complicated or confusing. Eating real wholesome foods is a good place to start!
Now, I’m off to make some banana nice cream, have I told you how amazing it is?! But seriously, you have to try it…
